How is a landfill built?

A landfill: more than just a hole in the ground!

Here at Proudfoot Rolloffs, we use landfills often. But it’s surprising how complex they really are! Let’s take a look at the steps of how landfills are created.

Building a landfill involves several steps to ensure proper waste management and environmental protection. Here is a step-by-step guide to the landfill construction process:

  1. Site Selection: The first step is to select an appropriate location for the landfill. Factors like proximity to the waste source, geology, and hydrogeology of the area, and environmental regulations are considered during site selection.

2. Obtain Permits: Before any construction begins, permits and approvals from local and state regulatory agencies are required. These permits ensure compliance with environmental regulations and guidelines.

3. Engineering and Design: Landfill engineering and design are crucial for the efficient management of waste and prevention of environmental contamination. It involves planning the layout, slopes, and layers within the landfill.Excavation and Preparation: The selected area is excavated to create a pit for waste disposal. The excavation process considers the depth, size, and shape of the landfill. The bottom and sides of the excavation are then compacted and graded.

4.Installation of Liner System: To prevent the leaching of contaminants into the surrounding soil and groundwater, a liner system is installed. This typically includes a composite liner composed of a clay or synthetic liner, a geotextile layer, and a geomembrane liner.

5. Construction of Leachate Collection System: A leachate collection system is crucial for controlling and collecting the liquid waste that seeps out of the landfill. Perforated pipes and gravel layers are installed to collect and redirect the leachate for proper treatment.

6. Waste Placement: Waste is carefully placed and compacted in layers within the landfill. Compaction reduces the volume of waste and minimizes air gaps, promoting stability and reducing odors.

7. Covering and Capping: Regularly, and at the end of each day, the disposed waste is covered with soil or an alternative material to control odor, minimize pests and vectors, and reduce the risk of fire. Once the landfill reaches its capacity, the final cap is installed as a long-term cover.

8. Leachate and Gas Management: Landfills produce leachate and landfill gas as waste decomposes. Proper management systems are installed to collect and treat leachate, while gas is often captured and used for energy generation.

9. Monitoring and Maintenance: After construction, ongoing monitoring and maintenance of the landfill are necessary to ensure regulatory compliance and address any potential issues. This includes groundwater monitoring, gas monitoring, and general site inspections.

Here at Proudfoot Rolloffs, we appreciate landfills because they help us keep our environment safe and provide a method to dispose of waste. Let’s work together to keep God’s beautiful earth clean!
